Recently, Mike & Mike were talking about Bo Ryan and the Wisconsin Men's Basketball program blocking a player from transferring. The block was for all Big Ten teams, a few ACC teams, Marquette, and Iowa State.
The Mikes made the argument that Bo Ryan has no right to decide where the player wants to transfer. Meanwhile, Bo Ryan was driving to work listening to Mike & Mike in the morning talking about this. He called into the show to defend his actions. Totally unprepared by the university and without any guidance, he tried to explain himself. Ryan wants people to know that he is a guy just doing what everyone else does. He also went on to ramble about being in the trenches with teammates and coaches and that players owe the program explanations and legitimate reasons for leaving. Ryan finished the discussion looking worse than before..
Aren't these college athletes, who are not being paid, who are on a limited eligibility, who make the university money through ticket sales and merchandise sales? Yes they get free tuition, but they can get that at plenty of other schools as well.
Why is it okay for coaches to bail and leave programs a mess? The excuse for them is typically, “this was the best move for my family.” However, if a STUDENT wants to improve his situation, he is the bad guy.
This is just another example of college athletes being taken advantage of by university employees. Those university employees have no regard for the futures of these students, but all regard for their personal salaries and accomplishments.
So when you are trying to discourage the future of those who make your life easier, prepare to defend yourself. Don't just call in a radio show because you feel you're being picked on. Get your story straight first. Or don't, it makes for great radio.
